To me the frustration is more not knowing what the real plan is, rather than losing this particular site. Wikipedia lists 94 European cities with 300k+ of population. Most of these and may more 100k+ cities are likely to have an industrial area that could work and would be near a sufficiently large city to provide a source of workers to build and work in the planned facility. The list will get smaller with desirable elements like close to port and transport infrastructure but will still be sizable. This site was not unique, other than indicating a potential tie-up with Northvolt.

Before a European site is finally selected, I think Ecograf needs clarity on where it will be sourcing the Graphite for the plant from. If its coming up from Epanko and through Suez canal then a site with port access to the Med. might be good. If its coming up the west coast of Africa then UK, France and Germany start looking better. If its some inland European source, other locations again would reduce unprocessed graphite transportation distances. Who is buying the graphite would be another factor. It would therefore appear a risky decision to select a European site before spherical graphite off-takes and the source of product is known.
