Yep a few weeks ago the market gave us no chance of getting into production, cell manufactures went all in on Chinese graphite, policy stuffed over graphite produces (graphite being too hard to determine country of origin… cmon give me break). Even Africa being reliable has changed with Mozambique basically at civil war and countries like Tanzania being unreliable (BKT). Additionally, solid state was to going to be the bees knees but rapid charging and extended mileage is now becoming a reality and they use a graphite anode. Shenxing battery for example. China will not grovel to the US and will not blink first and trump won’t back pedal on China so the high export prices are here to stay (for artificial graphite) natural graphite from china still tariff free I believe but most anode material exports are artificial at the moment anyway. Oh also add potential USA tariff of up to 920% due in May, china potentially stopping any export of items with graphite to the USA at a drop of a hat and battery manufacturers and OEM’s worth hundred of billions all potentially coming to a screeching halt because they thought they could keep buying cheap graphite at dirt cheap rates. Also add huge investments in military production now occurring with graphite being “critical” to the production this. One could also put in ESG but I still think price wins out over this. There will be big winners and losers in the next few months in the critical minerals space as now is finally the time the west will really start to decouple from Chinese critical mineral supply. Hopefully we are one of the winners.
