From what I've read, the incident at Apollo Hill involved a 29-year-old male who had been with Challenge Drilling for about six years. He leaves behind a spouse.
In my opinion, the rigs will likely be stood down until the new year. If work resumes before Christmas, one could argue Saturn management might be prioritising money over the safety and well-being of the people on site—potentially how this tragic situation arose in the first place. I sincerely hope that’s not the case.
The priority right now should be providing support to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, as well as to the individuals on-site who had to manage this tragic situation, including those who provided first aid. Nearly all mining industry field staff do 1st aid training, no one expects to have to use it.
There’s hearsay that an RFDS plane attempted to land but couldn’t due to the runway being unsafe. It was reportedly un-registered therefore not audited or maintained to safe standards.
This is a tragic reminder of the risks inherent in this industry. My condolences go out to everyone affected.
