Spotlight on Israeli weapons at UN conference

Arab states at a meeting of the United Nation's nuclear watchdog agency have turned the spotlight on Israel, saying it poses the biggest atomic weapons threat in the Middle East.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) last week called on Iran to prove by the end of October it is not secretly developing nuclear weapons.

But the 15 Arab delegates at an IAEA general conference have switched the attention to Israel by proposing a resolution calling on the Jewish state to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) legal adviser Diana Buttu says it is time the UN paid more attention to Israel's weapons program.

"Let's remember though that Israel is now in violation of about 69 UN resolutions. It has weapons of mass destruction, it has been in occupation of another country now for 36 years.

"International law simply does not matter when it comes to Israel because there is nobody enforcing international law," she said.
