A Sydney man acquitted of the murder of his second wife was today jailed for 22 years for murdering his first.

Thomas Andrew Keir has been convicted three times of the murder of his first wife, Jean Keir, in February 1988.

After his first two convictions were overturned on appeal, Keir faced a third trial before Acting NSW Supreme Court Justice Michael Campbell.

The court heard after discovering Mrs Keir, 22, was having an affair, he killed her and buried her body in the back garden of their home at Tregear, in Sydney's west.

But Keir maintained to family and friends that Mrs Keir had run off with her lover and left him.

The judge today sentenced the killer to 22 years in jail, with a minimum term of 16 years.

Keir had "apparently coolly and calmly commenced an extensive course of deception designed to conceal the murder", Acting Justice Campbell said.

Outside the court Mrs Keir's mother, Christina Strachan, said she was satisfied with the sentence.

"He's got a lot of time to think (about) what he's done," she told reporters.

    "I'm quite happy."

Keir was acquitted in 1993 of the murder of his second wife, Rosalina Canonisado, two years earlier.

The jury accepted his claim that Rosalina - who was Jean Keir's second cousin - was murdered while he was out shopping.

Keir, who did not react as his sentence was handed down, will be eligible for parole in 2014.
