China re-focusses its youth development teams into mass and elite departments
September 25 – With Europe’s giant clubs setting up academies, coaching schools and grassroots initiative across China, the Chinese Football Association (CFA) has stepped in to bring some kind of order to the chaos.
The CFA has set up men’s and women’s elite youth talent training departments to train national team players, while the former department covering football development will focus on building the pyramid structure and identification of youth talent.
Together they will be responsible for youth training camps, the management of player information, administration of youth national teams as well as overseas programmes for young players.
The CFA is also set to impose more rigorous youth development and academy criteria on its professional teams, as well as set up youth training camps at home and abroad.
As part of the focus on elite development the CFA has drafted in Christian Damiano, former manager at French youth training camp Clairefontaine, and Li Shubing, a former manager of Chinese Super League clubs.
Their responsibility will be to bring advanced training methodologies to the country’s elite training centres.
