    When you're hot you're hot

HYBRID cars are being touted as one answer to reducing energy use.

Now a renewable energy expert has suggested hybrid power stations could be another green solution.

Petratherm managing director, Terry Kallis, said his company was looking at combining a solar and geothermal generation plant to maximise emissions free electricity.

"We are examining the potential of combining solar with geothermal to 'top up' the heat from the underground reservoir," Terry told the Solar Cities congress yesterday.

"This could reduce the capital costs of drilling and improve the overall efficiency of energy production."

"It is still early days but there could be significant infrastructure savings in particular by providing large-scale, base load power for remote or off-grid applications - notably in the booming mining sector."

Terry said Australia was one of very few countries that had a strong solar footprint and a natural abundance of hot radiogenic granites.

Petratherm is one of Australia's geothermal pioneers with its advanced Paralana geothermal project in South Australia's northern Flinders Ranges due to supply commercial hot rock electricity by 2010.

Together with partner Beach Petroleum, Petratherm is drilling its first four kilometre deep well later this year.

It is planning to install a 7.5 MW power station and expand it to 30 MW to supply electricity to the nearby Beverley Uranium Mine.

Australian gold miner Lihir already uses a 56 MW shallow geothermal plant to power its PNG mine, saving around $50 million a year.

Other listed Australian geothermal companies include Geodynamics, Green Rock, Greenearth, Torrens, Panax and Kuth.
