Five in court over teen gang rapes
March 07, 2003
FIVE teenage girls, some as young as 13, were attacked and in most cases gang-raped by a group of young men in Sydney's inner-west last year, a court has been told.
Four brothers and a friend appeared in the NSW Supreme Court today charged over a series of gang rapes.
The males, aged between 16 and their early twenties, pleaded not guilty to attacks on five girls - all aged under 16 - that allegedly occurred in the Ashfield home of the brothers between January and July last year.
Justice Graham Barr told the court two of the victims were kidnapped, held at knifepoint and raped by all five young men.
Another two victims were raped by three of the accused and a fifth victim was indecently assaulted by one of the accused, he read from the youths' indictment.
Two of the victims were only 13 years old when they were raped and the others were under the age of 16.
Justice Barr set the trial of all five men, who have been in custody since they were charged last year, for September 15.
Two of the brothers have written a letter to Prime Minister John Howard, NSW Premier Bob Carr and other authorities protesting their innocence and claiming police corruptly conducted the case.
