Just a politically correct exercise so the snouts in the trough can say they are elected.

Their (A & TSI's) needs should be met by the elected politicians that we all rely on

    Voters flood ATSIC poll booths
    October 19, 2002

INDIGENOUS Australians have been flooding polling booths around the country to have their say in hotly contested Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) regional council elections.

Polling booths opened at 8am (AEST) and among the first to cast their vote was federal parliament's only indigenous member, Australian Democrats Senator Aden Ridgeway.

Senator Ridgeway cast his vote with his two sons at Redfern in Sydney, saying the elections provided ATSIC with an opportunity to better reflect the youthful character of the indigenous population.

About 70 per cent of Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders are aged under 25.

"I hope the ATSIC board of commissioners will take steps to broaden their engagement with the indigenous community and make sure young people are more involved in the decision-making process," Senator Ridgeway said today.
