Foreigners In Saudi Arabia Warned To Respect Ramadan.

    November 03, 2002, 12:18 PM

RIYADH (AFP) - Expatriates in Saudi Arabia will be deported if they eat, drink or smoke in public during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan starting early next week.

"This holy month commands the attention and respect of all Muslims," who refrain from eating, drinking, smoking and sex from dawn to dusk throughout the month, the interior ministry said in a statement carried by the SPA news agency.

"Non-Muslim residents of this country are thus required to respect the feelings of Muslims by not eating, drinking or smoking in public places, on roads and in work places," it added Sunday.

It said authorities will terminate work contracts of violators and then deport them.

Ramadan is expected to begin on November 5 or 6, depending on the sighting of the new moon.
