Las Vegas May Bet On Smart Cards

Smart cards may be used for fare payment, and possibly later on for payment and loyalty applications, when Las Vegas opens a monorail in 2004 to link eight hotels and the city convention center. Australian smart card and fare-collection company ERG Ltd. says it has won a $6 million contract for provide smart cards and a back-end processing system for the project. The contract was awarded by the company building the monorail, Montreal-based Bombardier Inc. Mike Nash, vice president and general manager of ERG Americas, says ERG will provide an undetermined number of its Venus smart cards that can carry multiple applications, allowing hotels and casinos to add such features as an electronic purse or rewards programs if they choose. Other riders will pay with lower-cost chip cards or magnetic-stripe cards, he says. However, a Bombardier spokesperson says the system will initially use mag-stripe cards, although it will be capable of handling smart cards. The Las Vegas Monorail Co., a private company funding the monorail project, predicts that 19 million passengers will ride the monorail in its first year.
