us disappointed no turkey

  1. The United States says it is disappointed that the Turkish parliament has voted against a government proposed legislation to allow 62,000 US troops onto its soil in preparation for any attack on Iraq.

While a bare majority of members voted in favour of the deployment, the vote fell short of the absolute majority needed to pass the legislation.

The American ambassador to Turkey, Robert Pearson, says the result is disappointing.

"We certainly had hoped for a favourable decision by the parliament," he said.

"But I want to emphasise the continuity of our relationships and the importance of the work that we have done thus far and the fact that the United States is still a friend of Turkey and we consider this relationship to be very important."
