    Ukraine to boost uranium output

RBC, 23.03.2007, Kiev 17:30:03.Ukraine has a fairly good chance of raising uranium production to 1,000 tonnes per year in the near future, and to 3,000 tonnes in the long run, which will in essence provide the country's annual demand for it, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko told a meeting in Sumy, one of the republic's major industrial cities. Uranium output now accounts for one third of the needs of the national nuclear energy industry, while the remaining part has to be bought on foreign market at monopoly-high prices. Developing this sphere will allow the country to save around $150m per year, Yushchenko stressed. He reiterated that Ukraine had the biggest uranium ore reserves in Europe, while only two companies were engaged in its production and processing, and just one involved in enrichment. Ukraine currently produces around 800 tonnes of uranium a year.
