Tony Abbott slams ‘blatantly partisan’ Triggs call on children

GILLIAN Triggs has rejected an accusation by Tony Abbott that her inquiry into children in detention was a “bipartisan” politicised exercise, saying the Australian Human Rights Commission was doing its job according to the law which underpins its work.
The Prime Minister earlier slammed the commission’s damning children in detention report as a “blatantly partisan politicised exercise’’, and said it “ought to be ashamed of itself’’.
Echoing the views of two of his senior ministers, the Prime Minister today questioned the motivation of the commission in waiting for the Coalition to be in power to investigate the issue.
Mr Abbott put a “very simple question’’ to the commission, asking “where was the human rights commission during the life of the former government when hundreds of people were drowning at sea?’’
“Where was the human rights commission when there were almost 2000 children in detention (under Labor)?’’
