TABLE-TOCOM gold powers to 13-wk high in heavy trade

TOKYO, May 21 (Reuters) - Tokyo gold futures <0#JAU:> jumped
for a fourth straight session on Wednesday, carving out 13-week
peaks as COMEX's surge to almost four-month highs unleashed a
flood of activity in precious metals markets.
The benchmark April 2004 gold contract on the Tokyo
Commodity Exchange (TOCOM) settled up nine yen per gram at 1,375,
a level not seen since February 14.
Turnover of all TOCOM gold contracts clocked in at an
extremely heavy 220,122 lots or 220 tonnes, up from Tuesday's
59,406 lots. That compared with just 66,243 lots of TOCOM
gasoline, usually one of the exchange's most active commodities.
Platinum futures <0#JPL:> ended mixed, even as spot platinum
powered to a two-month high following a bullish price
    outlook from refiner Johnson Matthey.
Spot gold was fetching $367.40/348.10 an ounce shortly
after TOCOM's closing bell, up from $366.10/80 last quoted in New
    York.
In the currency market, the dollar was fetching 116.61/66 yen
, compared with 117.09/14 at about the same time on
    Tuesday.
