Breast milk carries maternal antibodies which only lasts for as long as the child is breast fed. The child is NOT immune on its own.
Whooping cough booster is given in the last trimester to kick the maternal immune system into producing antibodies, given that it is possible to get whooping cough more than once from interpersonal contact with a contageous person, as it is throgh the vaccine waining in effectiveness like the effect after a period of time from actually having had whooping cough.
