We have created a society now where the population is so tied into the internet that when there is a power outage for any reason , no one can contact anyone , family , friends or neighbours to advise them of your well being or any impending danger eg., power lines down , etc. because the phone system is routed through the router for the internet.
Back in the day , the telephone system always stayed up provided a telephone line had not been brought down , allowing people to stay in contact with each other during a crisis.
