I didn't know this..............
Just learnt something new.
You know when you buy shares (or an index, or whatever) and you are buying with the expectation of a rising price .....................well, we all know that as going long, or buying on the long side.
And, if you buy with the expectation of the price falling, well, we all know that as short selling, or buying on the short side.
But, why call it 'long' or 'short' ?
Well, seems it's tied into that other saying, you know the one..........."Markets go up the stairs and fall down with the elevator."
The stairs are the long way, they take a long time to climb , hence you are trading on the 'long' side. The The elevator, on the other hand, goes fast, hence you are in for a short ride, so it gives rise to the saying going 'short'.
And that folks is the long and short of it all........................
