To quote the last verse of Eric Bogles song.

"But the band plays "Waltzing Matilda,"
And the old men still answer the call,
But as year follows year, more old men disappear
Someday, no one will march there at all"

    Oldest digger dies, aged 107

Australia's oldest war veteran has died in Tasmania aged 107.

Frank MacDonald died in the north-west regional hospital in Burnie this morning after a short illness.

Mr MacDonald was born in 1896 in the north-west Tasmanian town of Ulverstone and worked as a clerk, telegraph operator and labourer before enlisting in 1916.

He joined the 40th battalion in France - the only all-Tasmanian battalion in the Great War.

Tasmanian RSL president Ian Kennett says it is a sad day for both the veteran community and Tasmania.

"He did a lot for this country, he served in both world wars - World War One and World War Two," Mr Kennett said.

"He never left the shores in World War Two but he served at the Victoria Barracks in Sydney and as we all know, he was awarded a military medal for battling the battle of Passiondale in 1917 during World War One."

    "So long old timer."..and thanks!
