Singapore is to set up what is being hailed as the world's first tertiary education course on toilets.

Reports from Singapore say the lesser-known World Toilet Organisation (WTO) will begin offering formal toilet training to the island state's cleaners at a local technical college from October.

A group of about 30 students is to be taught a range of skills from basic repairing of leaks to recommending changes to toilet layout.

In future, the college also aims to offer learning modules on ecological sanitation, sanitation in rural and disaster-stricken areas and toilet design and architecture.

Course convenors estimate graduates will be able to earn at least double the current wages of most cleaners in Singapore, which should ensure students at least, are flush with cash.
