    Ozone talks end without resolution

United Nations talks on protecting the ozone layer have ended in disagreement.

The Nairobi talks stalled after the United States asked for permission to continue using an ozone-destroying chemical it had earlier agreed to ban.

US delegates say there is no effective alternative to the chemical, methyl bromide, which is used as an agricultural pesticide.

It wants to increase its use, but other delegates have rejected the demand.

David Doniger, of the environment group the Natural Resources Defence Council, says the US has given in to the demands of business.

"The Bush administration is tilted way over toward the polluters and caters to their wish list of regulatory weakenings," he said.

"Here you had a segment of the chemicals industry and of agri-business saying we want ours too."
