    Taliban fighter granted UK asylum
    January 19, 2003

A FORMER Taliban soldier who fought British and US troops in Afghanistan has been granted asylum in Britain because he fears persecution from the new Western-backed government in Kabul, the Sunday Telegraph reported.

The British authorities accepted that the 32-year-old man's life would be at risk if he returned to Afghanistan, the weekly paper added.

He was granted asylum last May, while living in the Welsh capital Cardiff, the Sunday Telegraph reported.

It said that Nick Bourne, the leader of the Conservative group in the Welsh Assembly, the local legislature for Wales, believed the asylum decision would be seen as a "kick in the teeth for our troops".

"I think most people would agree that anyone who has fought against Britain and our allies should not be granted asylum."

Britain's Home Office would not comment in detail on the report.

A spokesman said: "All cases are considered on an individual case-by-case basis. Grants of asylum are very low at the moment because of the changed circumstances" in Afghanistan.

The Sunday Telegraph also said it had learned from lawyers that asylum applications were being processed for at least two other Taliban fighters.

The former Taliban granted asylum had fled his country after the hardline Islamic regime fell in November 2001, making his way to Britain, the paper said.
