    Yes large capacity can be built (total kWh). The more liquid electrolyte the more charge you can store.

    The problem is the rate at which the energy can be supplied (the current, i.e. kW). To increase that you need more electrodes, deposition belts, cleaning mechanisms, pumps and so on.

    So capacity is cheap, current is expensive. Our batteries are suited to base-load type applications, not spiking high-current applications.

    In my opinion the best source of power for a fast-charging station is the grid, not a storage device. Storage just compounds the losses... you lose on the round trip at the charging station, and then again in the round trip in the vehicle.

    Also, I believe that recently published developments in hydrogen technology tip the medium-term balance of economics very strongly away from battery storage toward hydrogen fuel cells.
