stainless steel cars the future!!/article

Centro Inox, the Italian stainless-steel society, has been working on the Nido ("nest") project, the purpose of which is to design a safer two-seater car. Centro Inox collaborated with technicians in Pininfarina di Cambiano, Turin, Italy, to create a design that provides for the safety of both occupants and pedestrians. The car’s frame was made entirely from stainless steel EN 1.4301 (AISI 304). This was material was selected for its capacity to absorb energy in the event of a collision and for its increased mechanical strength in relation to the degree of deformation (strain hardening). As it requires no anti-corrosion surface treatment, stainless steel also makes the industrial process more flexible, and means that the cataphoresis treatment can be completely omitted.
