In the United States, Republicans have again expressed confidence that weapons of mass destruction (WMD) will be found in Iraq.

Their optimism has been heightened by a report from the US-led inspection team to members of Congress.

Head of the team David Kay says he is making solid progress but he does not expect any weapons to be found quickly because Iraq has a long history of hiding them.

Major General Keith Dayton, the man who leads the Iraq survey group of about 1,500 arms experts in Iraq, agrees.

"We have Australians, British, Americans working this, we have national guardsmen, active people, reservists, and every week it is phenomenal what we're finding and I am much more optimistic and confident every week that we're going to come to a very good resolution of this in due time," Major General Dayton said.
