Solagran International was formed in 1995 as a collaboration between Australian businessmen and Russian scientists in order to commercialise pioneering work carried out in the science of Forest Biochemistry at the St Petersburg Forest Technical Academy.

Natural, biologically-active substances - so-called Bioeffectives - had been identified having a wide range of beneficial applications in the prevention of disease, treatment of illness and promotion of health

The first in the Bioeffectives family, Bioeffective A, was approved for wide scale use as an anti-infective and wound healer as long ago as the 1940’s. Subsequently, new Bioeffectives have been developed and trialed in Russian and European institutions for medical, cosmetic, agricultural and veterinary applications. Several Bioeffectives have entered into the Russian and Latvian Pharmacopoeias and are used on a national scale.

In 1998 ownership of all intellectual property pertaining to technology and applications of Bioeffectives was transferred from the Academy to Solagran.

The ongoing Bioeffectives research program totals more than 3 million PhD man-hours of research and is arguably the largest-ever botanicals research program.

Recent R&D has been aimed at developing new Bioeffectives including powerful nutritional antioxidants and free radical scavengers, new anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial agents, natural sun blocks with melanoma-prophylactic properties and agents for treatment of serious liver diseases.

Solagran International has now changed its name to Solagran Limited and become a company listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.

The value of the company’s suite of Bioeffectives can only be guessed at, but one of the main purposes of listing has been to facilitate commercialisation and, with most of the groundwork completed, that may not be far off.
