signs of bottom in markets

One of the signs that needs to occur before we can have a bottom in the sharemarket is for the financial sector to repair its balance sheet.
NAB's capital raising will be the first of other capital raising amongst the banks. Until banks restore their own balance sheets, lending, liquidity & confidence in the economic system will be restricted.
Once the banks have restored/repaired their balance sheets, we are more likely to return to stable market conditions, going forward.
Whilst in the short term bank share prices may well fall, over the long time period banks will restore their balance sheets. As banks strengthen their balance sheets, their share prices will eventually follow.
Banks' strength comes from their balance sheet & hence influence what is happening in the real economy.
Every 20 years or so bankers have to re learn the rules, after letting their risk management stray.
