I think you might be a little confused as to why some ships tend to go from Lyttleton to Gladstone to top up.
It has nothing to do with coal grades.
It's to do with the depth of the Port of Lyttleton and the ships loaded draft.
Basically many ships( not all) can't leave Lyttleton fully loaded as the port is to shallow.
This got worse after the Christchurch earthquakes.
I know there has been much discussion on dredging the channel deeper.
I am not aware that this has occurred but it may have.
