A divided Ukraine weakens the EC and compels European NATO members to arm-up with US hardware & Software
What Russia wants: -Divide Ukraine & holding as much Ukrainian territory as possible as a warning to others like Moldova, Belarus , Georgia etc etc who may think about joining NATO. (Russia has already divided Georgia) Russia has theoretically annexed Luhansk, Donetsk. Zaporizhzhia, & Kherson but as per the BBC map below, there is a long way to go militarily to achieve that.
Downside for Russia: -Finland quickly joined NATO in response to Russia's invasion of the Ukraine. -Economic sanctions crueling the Russian economy -Russian loss of life
IMO, Russia will try to destabilise Finland (which borders Russia) once the Ukrainian war is done and dusted .
PS: The Ukraine has been slack by not putting more pressure on Crimea (Russia's prime claim to Ukrainian territory)
