We know Putin expected it to be over quickly, with Crimea and parts of DPR/LPR. The reason it wasn't over in weeks is due to Western/NATO support and suggestions that they could (with so much support) get back to the '91 borders. Operation gamble has failed, the sooner Zelenskyyy can acknowledge this, the better for Ukraine and Russia.
