SDL deposit (I am a ex holder)
1. SDL plan was to have first years of high grade production ore (62% Fe from memory) to finance the mine/plant/ transport then the vast majority or reserve was iterbirite inferior circa 40% fe ore.
2. There was no transport options at all they needed to build a long railway to port.
3. All board members were tragically killed in a plane crash on route to site this was at a key time for project.
4. Chinese/ Govt efforts to agree to finance rail/mine failed post GFC.
5. Power generation at site need to be build form scratch and financed poor /non existent infrastructure
6. Mature production cycle - tellingly by the time they got their act together most majors had already increase there production massively and it was the time of the GFC and all finance dried up
7. There were no credits for other metals in ore.
AVZ deposit
1. Expecting the grade to be consistently high (perhaps 2nd highest grade large hard rock resource after Greenbushes)
2. Manono - Lumbumbashi paved road already partial built by Chinese and expects to be completed in approx 18 mths or so
3. -
4/5. Chinese / Dathmor have agreed to finance the road construction for Manono - Lumbumbashi as well as getting existing hydro fixed at no cost to AVZ. Rail to various ports exists from Lumbumbashi. Some basic infrastructure in place from historic mining (70 yrs) and large town right next door including water onsite.
6. We are still at the very early stages of the new energy boom as opposed to a mature cycle Fe that SDL faced.
7. As well as Lithium, its likely that AVZ contains a world class Tin asset in it own right. Also tantalum credits.
If compared to Iron ore AVZ deposit at Manono/Kitotolo is more is more like a partially mined Brazilian/Vale iron ore deposit or a large Pilbara high grade deposit that BHP and RIO preside over.
We are early in this new energy revolution not at the end of a cycle.
A more fitting comparison is AVZ is sitting on a vast untapped oil deposit in early 1900's as opposed to SDL finding a OK Fe resource 100 years later.
Expand
I think you missed the point. I wasn't comparing the resource itself, just the strategic nature of them, the isolation and the perceived urgency from China.
Anyway, it's easy for me. I just won't invest. Best of luck to SH.
