Islamic Jihad claims Negohot shooting attack that killed two

By Amos Harel, Haaretz Correspondent, Haaretz Service and Agencies
Seven-month-old Shaked Avraham was one of two victims in the attack Friday night at the settlement of Negohot.

The Islamic Jihad has claimed responsibility for
Friday's shooting attack in the West Bank
settlement of Negohot, in which two Israelis,
including a baby girl, were killed and two others
lightly wounded, Israel Radio reported Sunday.

Killed in the attack were Eyal Yiberbaum, 27, and
seven-month-old Shaked Avraham. Yiberbaum was laid to rest late Sunday night in the Rehovot
cemetery. Avraham's Funeral will take place at 3:30 P.M. on Monday in Kfar Haro'eh.

Palestinian sources named the gunman as 22-year-old Mahmoud Hamedan from the village of Durrah, south of the West Bank city of Hebron. Hamedan was released from an Israeli prison two months ago, after serving a 14-month sentence.

"To our regret, we have two killed and two more
slightly wounded," said Dror Richter, spokesman
    for Magen David Adom.

The gunman infiltrated the isolated settlement
Friday, at around 9:30 P.M., from the northwest, through an area not enclosed by a fence.

Armed with an M-16 assault rifle, he knocked on
the door of one of the homes on the edge of the
settlement. Yiberbaum, who was visitng the home
for the Rosh Hashana holiday, opened the door
and was critically wounded when the gunman
opened fire. He died a short time later.

The owner of the house and a soldier opened fire
at the gunman, who tried to escape, firing a
number of rounds while running outside. Shots
fired at another home hit and critically
wounded the seven-month-old baby girl, who also
    died a short while later.

An army reserve unit that rushed to the scene
    killed the gunman.

The wounded were taken to Barzilai Hospital in
Ashkelon and the woman has since been released
    to her home.

Security forces scoured the area for any other
gunmen, after reports were received of a second
man fleeing the scene. No evidence was found to
    back the report.

Security sources told Israel Radio on Saturday
that the Israel Defense Forces would find the
    perpetrators of Friday's shooting attack.

    Government officials blamed Yasser Arafat's
Palestinian Authority for not stopping such
    violence.

The officials refused to say whether Israel would now speed up efforts to expel Arafat. Israel has not said when it would take action against the Palestinian leader, but it is believed the trigger could be a major
Palestinian terror attack with many casualties.

"We have information that the Palestinian Authority has not been doing anything in the last few days to deter these terrorist organizations from carrying out their
atrocities during the religious holidays," said Avi Pazner, an Israeli government spokesman.

Friday's shooting attack in the settlement of Negohot, came as Jews in Israel were celebrating the first night of Rosh Hashanah - the Jewish New Year - which began at sundown Friday and ends Sunday evening.

"The Palestinians have started the Jewish New Yearwith another bloody terrorist attack,"said David Baker, an official in the Prime inister's Office. "It's obvious that they'vetaken a New Year's resolution to continue with
their trail of terror against Israel. The
Palestinian Authority still refuses to take the
necessary steps to rein in the terror and
    prevent such attacks from happening."

"This shows again the ugly face of Palestinian
terrorists," said Jonathan Peled, an Israeli
    Foreign Ministry spokesman.

"It shows they are totally oblivious to the
sanctity of life, the sanctity of religion.
This is a barbaric act which raises a question
about whether we have a partner on the other
    side," he added.

In March this year, two Palestinians tried to
infiltrate the settlement but were killed by
IDF troops before managing to carry out an
attack. A general alert was announced and
soldiers backed by a local emergency response
squad attacked the two Palestinians and killed
them. They were found to be carrying assault
rifles and grenades, while one had an explosive
belt. Presumably they planned to carry out a
suicide bombing. No Israeli injuries were
    reported.

The previous attack had taken place a short
while after two other Palestinian terrorists
dressed as religious Jews entered the West Bank
settlement of Kiryat Arba, shot a couple
walking by the security fence and then killed a
married couple in their home before being
killed by IDF soldiers. Security sources
believed that the two attacks had been
    coordinated to be simultaneous.

Hamas had claimed responsibility for both
    attacks.
