McDonald's became the first fast-food chain Tuesday to offer high-speed wireless Internet in the Bay Area, another sign that the wireless technology is spreading from geek techies to mainstream.

For the first six weeks, access will be free for customers buying a Big Mac Extra Value Meal. Otherwise, the cost for the connection is $4.95. Either way, the connection is for two hours. The company will study usage and then adjust its offerings and pricing accordingly, officials said.
