Qantas sticking to its Singapore hub

Qantas has no plans to re-route its flights to Europe although some travellers want to avoid stopping over at its major Asian hub, Singapore.

Travel agents said Australian travellers were asking about unusual routes - via South Africa or the United States - to bypass Singapore or Hong Kong, places with some of the worst outbreaks of SARS.

Thai Airways said it had strong bookings on its European flights as travellers opted for stopovers in Bangkok.

A Qantas spokesman said it would be a "big issue" to move its hub from Singapore, a major centre for Qantas freight, catering operations and staff. About 50 Qantas flights a week land in Singapore, compared to fewer than seven in Bangkok.

Passenger traffic at Singapore's Changi Airport plunged 38 per cent in the airport's management to cut landing fees by 30 per cent.

The Qantas spokesman said the airline was unlikely to re-route flights but was monitoring the situation.

Bill Gair, the chief executive of, said the number of travellers changing flights to avoid SARS-affected airports was low compared to those cancelling flights to SARS-affected places, but inquiries were increasing.
