    Port Kembla to produce 100,000T copper in 2003

    TOKYO, June 11 (Reuters) - Japan's Furukawa Co Ltd 5715.T said on Wednesday its copper smelting subsidiary in Australia, Port Kembla Copper Pty Ltd, planned to produce 100,000 tonnes of copper cathode in 2003, up 69 percent from 59,000 tonnes in 2002.
    An official with Furukawa said the plant was currently operating at nearly 70 percent of its design capacity of 120,000 tonne per year.

    In calendar 2001, Port Kembla produced 44,000 tonnes of copper cathode.

    The smelter is owned 71.44 percent by Japan's Furukawa, 20 percent by Nittestu Mining Co Ltd 1515.T , 5.45 percent by Nissho Iwai Corp 8063.T and 3.11 percent by Itochu Corp 8001.T .
