PM backs cannabis use for pain relief
by: Karen Middleton , The West Australian

Australian Prime Minister John Howard has endorsed the medical use of cannabis for pain relief, but only in tablet or spray form. Howard said that he would give in-principle support for the use of cannabis for pain relief where doctors dispensed the medication. However, Howard said that his stance was not an indication that Australia was moving towards a softening of its drug laws. Howard said that any legislative reform to relax drug laws, such as in Western Australia, was "crazy". Howard's comments have followed the New South Wales Government's announcement of a four-year trial of cannabis for medicinal use for the treatment of chronic pain
