    Pinochet suffering 'mild dementia'
A court-appointed doctor has found that former Chilean president General Augusto Pinochet is suffering from mild dementia.

The opinion is crucial as a judge prepares to decide if the 88-year-old is mentally fit to stand trial over alleged human rights abuses.

Lawyers for the General said it was now impossible for him to stand trial but human rights lawyers disputed this.

The medical report did not comment on whether he was mentally fit to defend himself.

The investigating judge should make this decision soon.

General Pinochet has avoided trial for years on the grounds that he is mentally unfit to stand trail.

His 17-year military Government killed more 3,000 Chileans, according to a Truth Commission.
