Parents love faith in public education

A growing trend by parents seeking the best education for their children, not just in Independent schools but also within the public system, with selective schools being highly sought after.

No, it's not the old chestnut of "more money" needed; the key is the standard of education at public schools, what is taught, how it is taught and the standards of excellence and discipline accepted. Increasingly, parents are voting with their feet.

I have said here many times, and say again - the keys to improving education standards are to improve the quality of teachers (ATARs of low 50s completely unacceptable), improve the quality of the curriculum ( streamline choices to core subjects), revert from the failed present system to one where teachers actually teach ( instead of guide self inquiry), improve discipline standards, more external objective assessment, and impart a culture of striving for excellence rather than encouraging students just to achieve " benchmarks" ( ie close enough is good enough).

In other words prepare students for real life. Using successful schools as templates is a good s
tart. Increasingly, parents know public education is failing their children. Calls from the usual socialist elements to punish Independent schools for some mysterious reason misses the point completely and shows a lack of erudition. We need more successful schools, not fewer.
