Any company prospecting in Indonesia would be a target of the backlash which would now undoubtedly be led by the Armed Forces and their many operatives out of uniform.
The humiliation of East Timor after being led there by the Whitlam and Ford administrations, then a reversal led by the same two nations stamped by a compliant UN cannot be expected to go unpunished.
The TNI is a very large organisation, complex, modern with a strange mix of traditions we do not understand and values unique to themselves. Now mix that with the volatility of attacking their religion and religious leaders, suppressed for 3 decades by a despot we assisted in imposing on them and you get REVENGE at the slightest opportunity.
There are enough groups within Indonesia and the region that would take delight in the carnage that was Bali last week. Add to that the hundreds of millions of dollars in investments by Australian companies and you have the rich pickings they have at their disposal to play havoc with.
I would not touch any of the mining companies, construction, exporters and others with an exposure to Indonesia. They are in for another long cold winter. Rumours floating around Jakarta have it thaat the Army is about to get the legitimacy they crave post Suharto to enforce another term of the generals.
Pity we never learn.
