EXCLUSIVE: Esso quietly finalises PNG Gas pipeline agreement
Brisbane, 23 May, OGT — PNG Gas pipeline operator, Esso, has a big team of personnel in Port Moresby today to quietly finalise aspects of the project.

As reported exclusively in this week's edition of Oil & Gas VIEWPOINT, a large number of people connected with the project — including Oil Search managing director Peter Botten — have flown in for the document signing.

The signing is supposed to take place today.

However, neither the project consortium or the PNG Government is talking about it.

A source close to the consortium says that the reason for the secrecy is that "it is a feature of commercial life in Papua New Guinea that agreements — even as big as this one — can fall over at the last minute."

In contrast to the previous operator, Chevron, the Esso project team, led by Doug Schwebel, has taken a low profile in the way it has restructured almost all aspects of the pipeline project which will bring PNG highlands gas across the Torres Strait and down the Queensland east coast to the industrial port city of Gladstone.

PNG Gas will also find its way to Sydney eventually through a deal with AGL.
