SINA Sports Vertical Solidifies Leadership Via Its Record Setting World Cup Coverage and Strategic ICP/ISP Partnership for SOL
SINA was Ranked Number One Destination for Online World Cup Coverage And Formed Strategic Alliance with Chongqing Mobile to Provide Value-added Information on SINA Online Platform
BEIJING and SAN MATEO, Calif., July 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SINA (Nasdaq: SINA - News), a leading Chinese Internet media and services company, announced the successful conclusion of its World Cup coverage and the formation of strategic ICP/ISP partnership with Chongqing Mobile to provide value-added fee based information on SINA Online (SOL) platform.

SINA has been underlining its verticalization strategies that were fully carried out through its world-class World Cup coverage. In addition to its undisputable number one standing for online World Cup coverage in terms of viewer-ship, SINA has formed a number of important partnerships including the joint publishing of a World Cup Memorial book with Bertelsmann AG, one of the premier media and publishing companies in the world; partnerships with China Mobile and China Unicom to provide World Cup related short messaging services to both fans in China and Chinese fans who watched the China Team in Korea; a partnership with ESPN for an online soccer game on SINA played by soccer fans around China; and many others.

In addition to various partnerships, SINA has gained many top-tier corporate sponsorships for its World Cup coverage including Nike, Canon, China Mobile, China Unicom, Legend, Motorola, Kejian, CITIC Industrial Bank, among others.

During World Cup, SINA's official China Team World Cup Site was ranked by Telecom Information News in China, as the number one online destination for soccer fans in China with 51% of total online audience accessing the web site. Web site traffic recorded 1.2 billion page views during the tournament, the largest ever for a single sports event in China. In the past several years, SINA has covered world class sports events that China has participated in, including the Women World Cup in 1999, the 2000 Olympics in Sydney where SINA was appointed as the official site for the China Team and most recently in March 2002, SINA was appointed by Chinese Football Association (CFA) as the sole official Worldwide Internet Partner of China's World Cup Team that gives SINA complete access to the China Soccer Team and its members who are followed closely by millions of Chinese fans worldwide.

With the partnerships with China Mobile and China Unicom, SINA delivered 12 million short messages with up-to-minute World Cup news to hundreds of thousands mobile short messages subscribers in China, greatly boosted SINA's SOL business line. In June, SINA and Chongqing Mobile, the mobile telecom operator in one of the largest cities in China and a subsidiary of China Mobile, announced that they will jointly develop fee based information services through Virtual ISP and an SOL Chongqing destination Site. SINA and Chongqing Mobile will tap their respective advantages -- SINA's brand, user base and content resources, China Mobile's CMNET network as well as Chongqing Mobile's local resources -- to provide Internet and mobile telecom users with novel, efficient and integrated Internet and wireless value-added fee based services.

"Being the Global Exclusive Internet Partner of China National Soccer Team, we have successfully completed our mission during the 2002 World Cup while setting many new records for SINA network of websites," said Daniel Mao, SINA's Chief Executive Officer. "We are very pleased that Chongqing Mobile has selected SINA to provide region-specific information services including in- depth sports coverage to the residents in one of the largest cities in China. By combining SINA.com, SINA.net and SOL, SINA is committed to providing value- added information and high-quality web services to individual and corporate clients."
