Carbon may be either ‘organic’ or ‘inorganic’. Organic carbon is found in:

• living or dead organisms
• fossil fuels
• small deposits in rocks
• dissolved in water
• dispersed in the atmosphere

The majority of the inorganic carbon exists as carbon dioxide, carbonate and hydrogen carbonate.
