This should heat up the sector more.Probably one of many to come.

THE increasing demand for agricultural resources to feed the world's population has become a hot topic.

With the world's population growing by 200,000 per day, pressures are mounting on farmers to increase food production.

Also, as citizens of emerging economies such as China get wealthier, their diets are one fo the first things to change, and the changes usually involve greater meat intake. However, meat production is grain-intensive. Increasing demand for biodiesel is also contributing to rising demand for grain.

Wise-owl.com analyst Sven Restel says: "To meet increased demand for food, farmers are pressured to increase crop yields and the quality of their agricultural outputs. This, in turn, has increased the demand for fertilisers and other plant nutrients."

Soil Sub Technologies is an Australian company that has been in operation since 1997 and was incorporated in 2001. Its main product, NutriMix, is an organic growth medium with high nutrient and water-retention capabilities.

The product is composed of agricultural waste products, including by-products of sugar and palm oil production.

NutriMix can be used to promote growth of any plants or vegetation and has been shown to increase yields. "This product is especially useful for areas with poor soil conditions and low rainfall. There is potential to penetrate large farming markets," Restel says.

The company recently signed an exclusive licensing agreement with The Timms Cho Group, which is based in Hong Kong. This gives Timms exclusive rights to market the product in China and includes a deal to develop a 400,000ha biodiesel project in China's Jianxi province.

A minimum of $US30 million ($32 million) in revenue is expected from this deal, with a minimum payment of $9.65 million expected in the financial year ending June 2009.

A marketing contract has been signed with GRM International to market NutriMix in the Middle East and northern Africa -- areas with limited ground-water supply.

"It is still relatively early stages for this product, but a heightened market profile in China and the Middle East will certainly help the company gain recognition," Restel says.

NutriMix can also be used in landscaping applications such as sport fields or golf courses, and it has been used to supply the grassy field of a Rockhampton golf course.
