Nine Palestinians killed in Gaza raids

Israeli troops backed by tanks and helicopters have thrust into Gaza Strip's Bureij refugee camp, killing nine Palestinians before withdrawing.

Israeli military sources have confirmed activity has taken place in the area but could not elaborate.

Palestinian witnesses say Israeli soldiers, along with 25 tanks and several helicopters, raked the area with fire as they entered the camp.

They say one tank shell hit a Palestinian home, wounding five people, while a second home, belonging to a Palestinian militant, was blown up by Israeli troops.

Palestinian gunmen who returned fire say at least one Israeli helicopter fired into the camp.

A doctor at the local hospital says nine Palestinians died and more were wounded in the violence.

He says all suffered from gunshot and shrapnel wounds.

The Israeli incursion comes as Palestinians celebrated the first day of Eid el-Fitr, the four-day holiday that marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

Israel regularly sends troops into the Gaza Strip to operate against Palestinian militants it blames for suicide attacks that have killed scores of Israelis since the Palestinian uprising for independence began in September 2000 when peace talks failed.

Yesterday, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network was active in the Gaza Strip.
