    Rape defendants may quiz accusers

TWO brothers accused of gang raping teenage girls might cross-examine them in court.

A court heard yesterday that the pair have sacked their lawyers and have asked for a Muslim representative to appear for them.
The pair, their two younger brothers, and a friend have been charged with sexually assaulting or gang-raping five girls, aged between 13 and 18, in Sydney's west between January and July last year.

The accused, aged between 16 and 23, cannot be named because two were under the age of 18 at the time of the attacks.

Mark Rumore, for one of the brothers, formally withdrew his representation in the NSW Supreme Court yesterday. The lawyer for the other brother has already done so.

None of the accused was in court.

Counsel for the NSW Legal Aid Commission, Douglas Humphreys, told the court the brothers had asked for a Muslim representative, but had already refused a Muslim solicitor or barrister. (.......................most probably has no confidence in a Muslim lawyer....don't blame them......Snooker)

He said he was unsure of what they wanted and did not propose to make any further special arrangements.

The case was adjourned to a date to be fixed.

Mr Rumore said outside court that the decision could mean that the defendants could be cross-examining the girls they are accused of raping.

"Imagine the additional trauma of not only being cross-examined by a lawyer, but by the man you alleged did the offence," he said.

"At the moment there's no legislation (in NSW) that precludes them from doing that."

The males have pleaded not guilty to attacks on five girls which are said to have occurred in the home of the brothers.

During an earlier appearance, the court heard that two of the victims were kidnapped, held at knifepoint and raped by all five youths. - AAP
