Is it just me who's had enough of symbolism and feel-good gestures over Bondi?
A moment of silence at the NYE celebration. A "solidarity swim" - whatever the heck that is. A menorah on the Sydney Opera House sails.
It's all a lot of empty slop that solves nothing.
Maybe I'm extreme on this, but I actually don't get it. Like, at all. It immediately annoys me.
Do we really need to get together to declare that we're against mass shootings? Come on folks...! Is anything more obvious?
Solutions are more difficult than gestures. Here are two:
    * Deport any dual national who glorifies or incites actual violence
    * Reform immigration by cutting out the Islamic component
The great irony is that while the NYE silence is taking place, the whole area is dotted with heavily armed police units.
Why? Because it hasn't been solved. We've preferred symbols over solutions.
We really need to get over this culture of symbolism. It just helps us feel good while Rome burns.
