Whilst most of the focus is on Smart & Secure, we should not forget that MIK produces one of the world's most advanced printing systems as well. This has the ability to produce significant cashflow while Smart & Secure is commercilaised. It's just a pity they don't keep us up to date. Apart from the sales by its Italian agent, MIK said this in its last report to shareholders:

'MIS has been invited by its inkjet head supplier, XAAR Plc Limited,
to join them on their stand at a leading print equipment tradeshow in
the UK during April 2002. This tradeshow is similar to the Drupa
exhibition at which the equipment was originally showcased in 2000.'

After the tradeshow, Xaar issued this press release referring to the high level of interest in MIS' product:

XAAR ANNOUNCES IPEX A SUCCESS FOR INKJET PRINTING

Xaar, the leading inkjet technology company, today announced its positive show successes following IPEX 2002 at the NEC in Birmingham, UK. Off-stand sales totalled nearly €1.5 million and the company welcomed a great response to its IPEX seminars.

Having launched its greyscale Leopard printhead at the show, Xaar has confirmed the signing of two significant beta sites with leading players in the industrial printing and packaging sector and has reported considerable interest in the two digital inkjet machines on its stand – Mikoh Imaging Systems’ SL200 and CANPET’s Printomat 400.

“IPEX 2002 has been a real milestone for digital inkjet printing and has received significant interest and recognition in its ability to operate within a multitude of market sectors,” comments Jan Fineman, Chief Executive of Xaar plc. “It was quite clear that visitors to IPEX really understood the benefits of drop-on-demand inkjet technology more than ever, recognising its versatile dynamics, its ability to print on to a variety of different substrates and offer variable data applications.”

Launched for the first time on Xaar’s stand at IPEX was Mikoh Imaging Systems’ SL200 machine which incorporates Xaar’s XJ128 printheads, and acts as an additional function for offset and flexo presses enabling variable data. Available with 12 or 24 printheads dependent on application, Australian-based Mikoh Imaging Systems sold three of its SL200’s during IPEX and signed several new distribution deals in key markets around the world, generating over €1 Million worth of business.

Peter Anderson, Sales Director at Mikoh Imaging Systems said, “Ipex has been a unique opportunity for us to launch the SL200. Many printing companies are looking for ways in which to add variable data to a variety of different applications such as printing packaging and mail shots on flexo or offset presses. With the intelligent capability of Xaar’s XJ128, the SL200 allows the easiest or most complex of applications to produce variable data at great speed (400 ft/minute) whilst maintaining a high standard of quality.”

IPEX also provided an opportunity for the first public demonstration of CANPET’s Printomat 400, the first commercially available drop-on-demand digital inkjet machine to print on cylindrical objects such as cans for beverages or pet food. The entry-level Printomat 400 prints up to 250 products per hour, producing a print resolution of 180 or 360 dpi using Xaar’s XJ126 printheads and UV curable ink which cures in a single turn. Ideal for short print runs, this entry-level product has attracted considerable interest from promotional printers regarding personalisation for corporate events and weddings as well as from consumer product companies looking at more effective and efficient printing solutions for product sampling and market testing.

As a result of success at IPEX, CANPET expects to sign contracts for at least three new machines worth a total of €450,000.

Fineman concludes, “IPEX 2002 has been a sound investment for both Xaar and its partners and we look forward to revisiting it in 2006.”
