Booming red meat exports to Russia, but MLA gears up for competition
    19 February 2008

Meat and Livestock Australia set up an office in Moscow this week to expand its slice of this rapidly-expanding market against fierce competition.

The Russian market is already worth $130 million a year to the Australian red meat industry.

MLA says Russia is a country of 143 million people who are spending more each year on food and consumer goods.

It's become the latest frontier for the Australian red meat industry.

In recognition of this potential, the Australian Ambassador to Russia, Mr Bob Tyson, last night officially opened an MLA representative office in Moscow.

MLA’s European regional manager, David Jones, says,

“Australia is a significant supplier of high quality beef to the upper-end foodservice sector in Russia.

"The awareness of Australian red meat is growing and we are excited about playing an important role in the expansion of Russia’s retail and restaurant sectors.

“Russia is experiencing annual retail sales growth of 25pc and overall meat consumption in Russia is around 7.3 million tonnes a year.

"Red meat consumption currently stands at about 2.4 million tonnes annually.

"It is forecast that total meat consumption will reach 10 million tonnes by 2010.

"So we need to best position the Australian industry
