Authorities in Shanghai have employed hundreds of security guards to stop a spate of suicide attempts in the city's subway system.

Shanghai's subway system now has a team of 382 guards patrolling the lines, with one of their main tasks being to cut the number of suicides.

State media report the underground has an annual suicide rate of eight, but this year it was reached in six months.

The guards will attempt to stop attempts to leap on the tracks, and have been trained in first aid.

Suicide is an enormous problem in China.

Health authorities estimate every two minutes one person takes their own life, and eight others try.
