SilverTrain108, although that's a pretty cynical viewpoint most Australians hold such reservations - politicians rate very poorly relative to every other occupation group and our leaders are at the pointy end of that.

    So where to from here?

Until someone demonstrates otherwise I'm of the view that our Constitution has to be changed to:
. Enhance longer term planning in the national interest [eg. five year terms]
. Political parties must be required to register their plans prior to the commencement of elections and subsequently lose their commissions if they violate those plans [ie. held accountable for doing exactly what they said they would not do].
. Prior to becoming candidates, those running for office with political parties should be required to run the gauntlet of local seat selection without interference from above [ie. they must be our reps and not reps of backroom power brokers].
. Between elections it should be possible for voters to remove candidates if they abuse the platform on which they were elected [eg. Tony Abbott would have already lost his seat].
. To end the Senate as 'the States' house' - senators should represent the people of Australia collectively, perhaps the most popular person could be installed as our new version of a GG.
. To enable the public to directly determine who the PM is - this must not be left to MPs. If the PM has to be removed due to criminal behaviour etc there should be fresh elections.

    And then some!
